Introduction
Cucumber beetles are among the most destructive pests of cucumbers, squash, melons, and other garden vegetables. These small beetles not only feed on plants but can also spread bacterial wilt and other diseases that can quickly kill susceptible crops. Early detection and natural control methods are essential for protecting your garden.
How to Identify Cucumber Beetles
The two most common species are the striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum) and the spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata). Striped cucumber beetles are yellow-green with three black stripes running down their backs. Spotted cucumber beetles are yellow-green with twelve black spots on their forewings (Photo 1). Adults are about 1/4th inch long and are often seen feeding on leaves, flowers, and young fruits. Larvae are slender, creamy-white grubs with brown heads that live in the soil and feed on plant roots.
Host Plants and Crops
Cucumber beetles attack a wide range of cultivated and wild plants. The main cultivated plants include cucumbers, zucchini, squash, pumpkins, watermelons, cantaloupes, gourds, beans, corn, sweet potatoes, peas and sunflowers. Adult cucumber beetles generally move into gardens from nearby wild host plants, including goldenrod, aster, ragweed, pigweed, wild cucumber, buffalo bur and Black- eyed Susan. These wild hosts provide food and shelter before beetles migrate into vegetable gardens.
Life cycle of Cucumber Beetles
Cucumber beetles have a relatively short life cycle and consist of four developing stages including eggs, larvae, pupae and adults. Under optimum conditions, they can complete multiple generations in each year.
Eggs: Female beetles lay clusters of yellow-orange eggs in cracks in the soil near the base of host plants. Eggs hatch in about 5 to 10 days.
Larvae: After hatching, larvae feed on roots and underground stems for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. Root feeding can weaken plants and reduce growth.
Pupae: Larvae pupate in the soil. The pupal stage usually lasts 6 to 10 days.
Adults: New adults emerge from the soil and begin feeding on foliage, flowers, and fruits. Depending on temperature and location, the complete lifecycle may be completed in 30 to 45 days.
Damage Caused by Cucumber Beetles
Both larvae and adults damage plants. Adults typically chew irregular holes in leaves, flowers, and young fruits, while larvae feed on roots and underground stems. Heavy feeding by both stages can stunt plant growth and reduce yields. In addition, cucumber beetles can transmit bacterial diseases that often cause plants to wilt and eventually die. Cucumbers and muskmelons are especially susceptible to the bacterial diseases spread by cucumber beetles.
Natural and Biological Control
Cucumber beetles can be effectively managed using a combination of cultural and biological control strategies. Biological controls include beneficial nematodes and predatory insects such as green lacewings and spined soldier bugs.
Biological control
- Beneficial Nematodes: Beneficial nematodes, including Steinernema feltiae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, (Photo 2) help control cucumber beetle larvae in the soil. For effective control, apply approximately 25,000 nematodes per square foot of soil around susceptible crops.
- Green lacewings: Green lacewing larvae (Photo 3) feed on cucumber beetle eggs and newly hatched larvae, helping to reduce cucumber beetle populations. For effective control, release about 1,000 green lacewing eggs per 200 square feet of beetle infested garden area.
- Spined soldier bugs: Spined soldier bugs (Photo 4) also prey on cucumber beetle larvae before they enter the soil to pupate.

Cultural Control
- Hand-picking: Hand- picking adult beetles early in the morning when they are less active and dropping them into a container of soapy water.
- Trap crops: As a trap crop, plant a small area of highly attractive cucurbits, such as Blue Hubbard squash, near the garden to draw beetles away from main crops.
- Weed Management: Remove nearby weeds and wild host plants that can serve as breeding sites, shelter, and food sources for cucumber beetles.
