  • Winged reproductive termites (alates): These termites emerge and swarm during warm, humid weather to establish new colonies.
  • Tiny, wood-colored pellets: Drywood termites produce small fecal pellets (frass) that accumulate beneath infested wood.
  • Bubbling or blistering paint: Moisture associated with termite activity can cause paint to bubble, blister, or peel.
  • Warped wood: Termite feeding can cause doors and windows to warp, making them difficult to open or close.

What Are Beneficial Steinernema carpocapsae Nematodes?

Beneficial Steinernema carpocapsae (Photo 3) are naturally occurring entomopathogenic (insect-killing) nematodes found in soils. These microscopic organisms actively search for susceptible insect hosts, including termites living in moist environments. Unlike chemical insecticides, beneficial nematodes are safe for humans and pets, leave no toxic residue, and target insect pests without harming plants or the environment.

How Do Steinernema carpocapsae Nematodes Kill Termites?

Beneficial Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes actively search for termites in the soil and enter into the termite through natural openings such as the mouth, anus, or spiracles. Inside the termite body, the nematode releases symbiotic bacteria (Xenorhabdus nematophila), which rapidly multiply and cause septicemia. The infected termites usually die within 48- 72  hours depending on temperature, moisture, and termite species. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead termites. After the food source is depleted, a new generation of infective juvenile nematodes emerges into the soil to search for additional termites or other hosts. This nematode cycle can continue as long as soil moisture and suitable hosts are available.

Effective Application Rate

For effective termite control, apply 25,000 Steinernema carpocapsae infective juveniles per square foot to areas infested with termites using a watering can (Photo 4). For localized treatments around termite galleries, stumps, or infested wood, apply enough nematodes to thoroughly saturate the target area. Higher application rates may be appropriate for heavy termite infestations or where soil conditions are less favorable.

How to Apply Beneficial Nematodes

Proper application is essential for successful termite control with beneficial nematodes. Before application, thoroughly water the soil to ensure it is moist, as moisture allows the nematodes to move efficiently toward termite galleries; avoid applying to dry soil.

Mix the nematodes with clean water, and keep the suspension agitated throughout application to prevent the nematodes from settling. Apply the mixture during cool conditions, such as early morning, late afternoon, evening, or on cloudy days, and avoid direct sunlight because ultraviolet (UV) light rapidly reduces nematode survival.

Focus applications on areas of known or suspected termite activity, including foundation walls, tree stumps, wooden fence posts, landscaping timbers, termite tunnels, and the soil surrounding infested structures. After application, maintain consistently moist soil for 7–14 days to help the nematodes survive, establish, and locate termite hosts. Avoid waterlogging the soil, but do not allow it to dry out during this period.

For maximum effectiveness, apply when soil temperatures are between 15 and 30°C (59–86°F), soil moisture is adequate, UV exposure is minimal, and drought conditions are absent. Also, avoid applying nematodes immediately before heavy rainfall, which may wash them away from the treatment area.

Can Nematodes Eliminate an Entire Termite Colony?

Beneficial nematodes can significantly reduce termite populations, particularly in localized infestations and around soil-accessible galleries. However, they should generally be viewed as one component of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy rather than a guaranteed stand-alone solution for eliminating large, established colonies. Combining nematodes with moisture management, removal of wood-to-soil contact, regular inspections, and, where necessary, professional termite treatments provides the most reliable long-term protection.
