Introduction
Mexican bean beetles are among the most destructive pests of beans and other vegetable crops in home gardens. Mexican bean beetles are plant-feeding insects, Their adults and yellow, spiny larvae scrape leaf tissue from the undersides near the edges of leaves, creating a distinctive lacy, “windowpane” or skeletonized appearance that weakens plants and reduces yields. Understanding their lifecycle, host plants, and management options can help gardeners protect their vegetables naturally.
How to Identify Mexican Bean Beetles
The Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis) is a member of the lady beetle family but differs from beneficial ladybugs because it feeds on plants rather than insect pests. Adult beetles are copper-yellow to orange (Photo 1) and have 16 black spots on their wing covers. They are about one-quarter inch long and often resemble oversized ladybugs. The larvae are yellow, soft-bodied, and covered with branched spines, giving them a fuzzy appearance (Photo 2).

Host Crops
Mexican bean beetles mainly attack many types of legumes including:
- Snap beans
- Lima beans
- Soybeans
- Pole beans
- Bush beans
- Cowpeas
- Mung beans
- Pinto beans
- Kidney beans
During heavy infestations, they may occasionally feed on squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, zucchini, and other cucurbit crops.
Lifecycle of Mexican Bean Beetles
Mexican bean beetles have a relatively short lifecycle and can produce multiple generations each year. Life cycle consists of four life stages including eggs, larvae, pupae and adults (Photo 3):
Eggs: Females lay clusters of 40 to 75 bright yellow eggs on the undersides of leaves. Eggs hatch in approximately 5 to 14 days, depending on temperature.
Larvae: The yellow, spiny larvae feed aggressively on leaf tissue for about 2 to 5 weeks. This stage causes the greatest amount of plant damage.
Pupae: Mature larvae attach themselves to leaves and pupate. The pupal stage lasts approximately 5 to 10 days.
Adult: New adults emerge and continue feeding on foliage. Under favorable conditions, the complete lifecycle can be completed in as little as 30 to 40 days, allowing several generations to develop during the growing season.
Damage Caused by Mexican Bean Beetles
Both adults and larvae feed on leaves by scraping away tissue from the underside of leaves while leaving the upper surface intact. This feeding creates a distinctive “windowpane” or skeletonized appearance. Common symptoms include:
- Skeletonized leaves (Photo 4)
- Brown, dried foliage
- Reduced photosynthesis
- Stunted plant growth
- Lower crop yields
- Premature leaf drop
Natural and Biological Control
1. Green Lacewings: Green lacewing larvae (Photo 5) are excellent predators of Mexican bean beetle eggs and young larvae. Releasing lacewing eggs or larvae early in the season can help suppress pest populations before they become damaging. For effective control, release approximately 1,000 green lacewing eggs per 200 square feet of infested garden area.
2. Spined Soldier bugs: Spined soldier bugs (Photo 6) prey on the larvae, helping reduce populations before serious damage occurs.
3. Parasitic Wasps: The tiny parasitic wasp Pediobius foveolatus is one of the most effective biological control agents for Mexican bean beetles. The wasp parasitizes larvae, preventing them from developing into adults.
4. Hand Picking: Regularly inspect the undersides of leaves for egg masses, larvae and adult beetles and remove them into a container of soapy water and crush them with hand.
5. Garden Sanitation: Remove crop debris at the end of the growing season. Adult beetles often overwinter in plant residue, weeds, and protected areas near the garden.
6. Crop Rotation: Avoid planting beans in the same location year after year. Crop rotation helps reduce overwintering populations and lowers infestation pressure.
