Introduction

Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) are becoming active in gardens, and now is the time to take action. These destructive pests can quickly infest zucchini, pumpkins, summer squash, winter squash, and other cucurbit crops. Adult squash bugs are currently emerging, mating, and laying eggs, making early detection and control essential for protecting your harvest.

What Are Squash Bugs?

Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) are one of the most common and damaging pests of squash and pumpkin plants. Adult squash bugs are approximately 5/8 inch long, dark gray to brown, and have flattened bodies (Photo 1) that allow them to hide in cracks, mulch, and plant debris. As temperatures warm in late spring and early summer, overwintered adults emerge from their hiding places and begin searching for host plants. After mating, females lay clusters of shiny bronze-colored eggs on the undersides of leaves, often along leaf veins. These eggs hatch within 7 to 10 days, producing small gray nymphs that begin feeding immediately.

Damage Caused by Squash Bugs

Both adult squash bugs and their nymphs feed by piercing plant tissue and sucking out plant juices. This feeding causes significant stress to squash plants, fruit rot (Photo 2) and can lead to wilting despite adequate soil moisture, leaf browning and dieback, reduced plant vigor, poor fruit production, premature plant decline and increased susceptibility to diseases. Heavy infestations can severely weaken plants and may even kill young squash seedlings. Feeding damage often resembles drought stress, causing gardeners to overlook the true source of the problem.

Why Early Control Is Important

Squash bug populations grow rapidly once eggs begin hatching. Young nymphs are much easier to manage than mature adults because they are smaller, less mobile, and more vulnerable to predators. Natural Control of Squash Bugs With Predatory Insects

1. Green Lacewings

One of the most effective biological controls for squash bugs is the use of beneficial predatory insects, particularly green lacewings. Adult green lacewings are harmless pollinator-like insects, but their larvae (Photo 3) are voracious predators often called “aphid lions.” These beneficial larvae actively search plants for soft-bodied insects and pest eggs.

  • Whiteflies

  • Mealybugs
  • Small caterpillars

For best results:

2. Assassin Bugs

Assassin bugs (Photo 4) are generalist predators that attack a wide range of garden pests. Using their piercing mouthparts, they capture and consume both squash bug nymphs and adults.

3. Spined Soldier Bugs

The spined soldier bug (Photo 5) is a beneficial predatory stink bug that feeds on many garden pests. Both nymphs and adults prey on squash bug nymphs, caterpillars, beetle larvae, and other soft-bodied insects.

Cultural Control Practices

Biological controls work best when combined with good cultural management practices.

1. Inspect Plants Daily

Check the undersides of leaves every day during the growing season. Look for clusters of bronze-colored eggs arranged neatly along leaf veins.

2. Remove Egg Masses

Hand-crushing or removing egg masses is one of the simplest and most effective methods of preventing future infestations. A single egg mass can contain dozens of future pests.

3. Remove Garden Debris

Adult squash bugs often hide under boards, mulch, dead leaves, and other plant debris. Keeping the garden clean reduces overwintering sites and lowers pest pressure.

4. Use Row Covers Early

Floating row covers can prevent adult squash bugs from reaching plants and laying eggs. Install covers early in the season and remove them when pollination is needed.
